SEEWQCI, coordinated by GRNET – National Infrastructures for Research and Technology, participated in the official kick-off meeting of Iberian Quantum Communications Infrastructure (IberianQCI), held on 14 May 2026 at the headquarters of Infraestruturas de Portugal in Lisbon.
The event marked the official launch of IberianQCI, a strategic European Quantum Communication Infrastructure (EuroQCI) initiative connecting the national quantum communication infrastructures of Portugal (PTQCI) and Spain (EuroQCI-Spain), including the Galician quantum hub, through terrestrial and future space-based cross-border links. The meeting brought together government representatives, the European Commission, national quantum initiatives, and research organisations from across Europe. High-level interventions, a live demonstration of the PTQCI network, and a dedicated session on EuroQCI developments in Portugal and Spain reflected the ambition of the initiative.
GRNET was represented by Dr. Alexis Aivaliotis, Technical Project Manager at GRNET, and Ass.Prof. George Kanellos, NKUA and HellasQCI Project Technical Coordinator. In the afternoon session on interoperability and connectivity within EuroQCI, Prof. Kanellos participated in the international panel of experts alongside representatives of TransEuroOGS, QCI-AT-CZ-PL, QUAPITAL, and EuroQCI-Spain.
The participation of SEEWQCI and HellasQCI in the IberianQCI kick-off reflects the growing cross-project collaboration within the EuroQCI community and the shared commitment to building a resilient and interoperable quantum communications infrastructure across Europe.
